Teaching & Learning

Teaching and Learning is at the heart of
everything we do.

Young people at The Hammond thrive as they have the opportunity to study a broad, balanced and rich curriculum in a supportive and nurturing environment. Our academic staff are highly effective and skilled in delivering the highest quality academic education, ensuring that students make excellent progress and are fully supported to fulfil their potential.

In years 7- 9, our students study the core subjects of Mathematics, English and Science alongside a range of Humanities, Arts, Languages and Technology subjects. In year 10 students continue with their core learning and study towards GCSE’s in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science. Students also opt for a further 3 GCSE or equivalent courses to study from a wide range of options. A range of A levels/ Level 3 courses are offered to our post 16 students.

Our young people are also encouraged to engage with a wide range of extra-curricular activities to broaden their life experiences and expand their understanding of the world around them. The Hammond further supports this through a robust and varied PSCHE programme in which we regularly involve both our community and key external companies.

Arts Education & Academics: The Best of Both Worlds

The Hammond’s vocational training is complemented by a rigorous academic curriculum, integrated within the daily timetable. Academic expectations are high and students flourish within small, dedicated classes.

Our exam results speak for themselves, with year-on-year 100% pass rates at both GCSE and A Level. Furthermore, in 2022 the number of students attaining 5 or more GCSEs at Grade 4 and above was 100% and at A-Level, 82% of students attained grades A* - C. Our destinations not only include starring roles on the West End, and coveted places in the world’s leading drama schools – we can also count Oxbridge and Russell Group universities as landing points for Hammond students.

Our young people are also encouraged to engage in a wide range of extra-curricular activities to broaden their life experiences, encourage community involvement and expand their understanding of the world around them.  Students have taken part in The Ethics Cup, winning their regional heat, and competed in the National Final in St. Andrews last March. There are also the opportunities to complete Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, take part in Model United Nations Conferences in the Netherlands, enter subject-specific Science and Maths competition, and travel to New York to study at the French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts.

The Hammond offers academic excellence, first-rate vocational training, as well as guidance and support to ensure all pupils and students develop into responsible, caring and thoughtful members of the community. We are humbled every day by the way our young people thrive both vocationally and academically.
