Arielle Smith’s ‘Carmen’ to Debut in the San Francisco Ballet’s 2024 Season

Congratulations to former Hammond student, Arielle Smith, whose reimagining of Carmen will have its world premiere with the San Francisco Ballet in their 2024 Season.

Arielle, a Havana-born, and now London-based choreographer was recently awarded an Olivier for Outstanding Achievement in Dance and named “One to Watch” by The Guardian in 2022.

Revisiting the story’s original themes, Carmen will restore agency to the iconic heroine, accompanied by Smith’s boundary-pushing, cinematic approach to choreography and the colours and sounds of Cuba, brought to life by a newly commissioned score by Grammy Award-winning jazz composer and pianist Arturo O’Farrill that incorporates Cuban folk music.

Watching Arielle’s career develop has been a great privilege and we wish her and the San Francisco Ballet all the best for the production and the 2024 Season.
