The Hammond is renowned throughout the world of Performing Arts for providing outstanding dance and musical theatre training.
Students are given the opportunity to perform on a regular basis throughout the year and our successful shows include West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Chicago, Giselle, La Bayadere, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and many more. A considerable number of Hammond students now perform in professional shows throughout the world including the West End, tours across Europe, USA, Australia and international cruises (see Destinations tab). The Hammond is very proud of their final year students, with a high percentage gaining employment prior to their graduation.
The Hammond provides a strong foundation for entry into professional life in the Performing Arts. The Level 6 Diplomas, validated by Trinity College, London, provide specialist vocational studies for a career in the world of dance, musical theatre and performance. Hammond’s purpose is to nurture and develop practical skills required to secure and sustain employment as a professional performer.
The first year students undertake a combined year before specialising in the second year in either dance or musical theatre. The curriculum for both courses is rich and varied and students enjoy vibrant, challenging lessons with expert practitioners including senior figures from the international world of dance and musical theatre. In addition to our own faculty we have visiting professionals taking workshops and masterclasses. Students also benefit from industry standard performance and rehearsal spaces. As part of the Diploma qualification, all practical work is underpinned by contextual and theoretical studies, known as Independent Professional Studies (IPS). This is designed to encourage students to become self-reliant reflective learners.
During their final year, students are given the opportunity to present their work in The Hammond Graduate Showcase. This is strongly supported by the Hammond’s in-house Industry Co-ordinator together with relevant staff who offer guidance in the implementation of CV’s, Headshots and Showreels as well as introducing them to Agents and Casting Directors. The Showcase is performed annually in our state of the art theatre and in a London theatre. In addition, we hold Agency days at the Hammond to enable graduating students to audition within a studio environment.
Upon completion of the Trinity Diploma, students can choose to convert their qualification into a Degree, BA(Hons) Professional Practice in Arts, accredited by Middlesex University. Diploma graduates are given priority on this course.
A Level/Additional Curriculum
At the Hammond, students are encouraged to see academic studies as preparation of all aspects of adult life, including a career in the Performing Arts. We offer a range of A Level subjects which can vary according to demand. We pride ourselves on offering small classes, which encourage focused learning in a supportive environment. In addition for students who have either chosen not to take A Levels or have completed their studies elsewhere, there are a range of alternative options: Pilates Level 1 Mat Teaching Qualification, Fitness Training or Zumba classes. These subjects run in parallel to the A Level classes.
Students are also offered additional training in RAD Major examinations and ISTD Modern and Tap Major examinations.
