Plymouth Town

The Hammond, in collaboration with Chetham's School of Music, Manchester, will be celebrating the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten with the world première and realisation of his Ballet, Plymouth Town. The piece itself was written in 1931 when Britten was just seventeen, during the summer holidays at the end of his first year at the Royal College of Music.  Having been advised to send the original score to the Camargo Society, then the foremost promoter of ballet in the UK, Britten was without success and never revised the work.

Chester Mystery Plays -

Chester Mystery Plays 2013 Director Peter Leslie Wild and writer Stephanie Dale visited The Hammond and worked with our students on a number of workshops. Artist Dai Owen drew some 'reportage' sketches of the workshops, effectively catching the feel and atmosphere of the event. Dai is recording the story of the 2013 Mystery Plays in this way, from the beginning through to the production, with special emphasis on recording the back stage and rehearsal work - the areas the public can't usually access. These sketches show the final discussion with Peter and Stephanie, and the students acting out a 'living statue' and child on a Chester Street.
